REFLECTION

My hope for when you read this blog is that you gain more insight about how animals aid in the aging process, as well as the grief and loss that comes with older age. Both topics, although very different, have similar components and may actually go well together. As an elder person experiences loss and prepares for their own mortality, an animal can reduce that depression or improve mental functioning during those very difficult times. The pros of being around animals in old age very clearly outweigh the cons. I believe that animal companions hold the potential to aid in the loss and grief that may come with aging. As a person is preparing for death it may be beneficial to enroll in a pet-visiting program. It may make their lives a bit easier, even if just for a few moments at a time.
